Troubled Patriots Cornerback Jack Jones Finally Breaks Silence On Gun Charges

The New England Patriots may enter the 2023 NFL season without one of their better players as Jack Jones faces serious gun charges.

The Patriots cornerback was arrested at Logan Airport on June 18. He faces two counts of each unlawful possession of a firearm, carrying a loaded firearm, possession of a large-capacity feeding device, possession of ammunition without an ID card, and a count of airport security violation.

Jones had a key role on the Patriots defense and his future with the Patriots may be hanging in the air. Reporters asked him a few questions about this, but Jones’ response wasn’t really clear.

“That’s not my call,” the cornerback said. “That’s up to coach (Bill Belichick). I just do what I’m supposed to do.”

Jones was plead not guilty in June and was released on bail. He will appear in a courtroom for his hearing on August 18.

It is a difficult situation, but Jones has his focus somewhere else.

“When I get out here on the football field, it’s all ball,” Jones said Friday. “I just come out here to play ball and give it my all. And do what I’m supposed to for the team.”

The Jack Jones scenario may take another turn amid gun charges

Will Bill Belichick keep him around for another season? Losing him would be a big blow. Things got a bit strange between Jones and the Patriots following Thursday’s practice. He was one of the last players to take the field and it was really awkward.

At one point, the corner broke a pass for Kendrick Bourne and became “both verbally and physically animated in that moment, and it continued for a bit,” per Mike Giardi from Boston Sports Journal. Patriots coaches tried to calm him down, but something strange happened. Jones disappeared from the field only to return 20-minutes later as a non-participant. What happened?

Patriots cornerbacks coach Mike Pelligrino talked to Jones, but didn’t want to share any information about their conversation. The cornerback made similar comments on the incident.

“Today is today,” he said. “It’s in the past. It’s nothing bad. We good today though.”
