Ex Patriots Captain Has Bold Message For QB Mac Jones: ‘Can’t Keep Defending It’

New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones found himself in hot water following the game against the New York Jets, and former captain Devin McCourty has an advice for him.

Stay away from incidents.

Jones’ on-field attitude has been making headlines for quite some time now. It seems like many players used this opportunity to speak their mind about Jones’ reputation. What triggered them? The incident that broke between Jones and Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner.

If you ask McCourty, he will say that Jones is not a dirty player. He is in his third year with the Patriots and seems to be ready to show his best football this season. However, he needs to avoid incidents at any cost.

“I won’t call Mac a dirty player because I know him personally and I think he’s a good dude, a good kid,” McCourty said on the Greg Hill Show on WEEI radio in Boston. “But I will say he has to stop being around these incidents. It won’t matter what any former teammate says, current teammate says—like it’s getting to the point where, is it on purpose, did this happen, is it intentional? It’s not gonna matter because once you’re involved in too many of these situations, it is what it is.”

Gardner claims that Jones hit him below the belt. He and Jones got into a thing at one point of the game and Gardner came up with his story.

The former Patriots captain wants Jones to take his advice

McCourty didn’t change his mind at any given moment. He insists that Jones is a good player. Well, one thing stands for sure. McCourty and other players or coaches won’t be able to defend Jones if these incidents keep happening.

“We can’t come back and say, ‘No, this is what he was meant to do.’ Because there’s a lot of players that play this game and they’re not involved in any of these things,” McCourty said. “So he does need to do a better job of finding his way out of whatever it is you want to call it.”

It is interesting to note that former Patriots DE Chris Long agreed with Gardner. He even said Jones was the “Top 5 dirtiest QB of all time.” Lawrence Tynes shared similar opinion, adding that the NFL should fine Jones. Add Darius Slay from the Philadelphia Eagles to the mix and there you have an awkward combo of players who picked the same side.
