Lakers Sign Former Stephen Curry Backup Ahead Of Regular Season Opener

The Los Angeles Lakers lost the preseason finale to the Phoenix Suns and players now gear up for the season opener. The front office made one final change before the start of the 2023-24 season and let’s just say it was an unexpected move.

According to several sources, the franchise signed former Golden State Warriors player Quinndary Weatherspoon. Chris Haynes from the NBA on TNT and Bleacher Report was the first to mention the potential signing.

Weatherspoon most recently played in the 2021-22 NBA season as a player for the Golden State Warriors. He saw action in 11 games and averaged 2.7 points and 1.3 rebounds per game while shooting 57.1% from the field.

Weatherspoon’s agent, Daniel Hazan, confirmed the signing. Hayes also noted that the newly-signed Laker “averaged 15.5 points and shot 52 percent and 40 percent from distance in two preseason games for Israeli club Maccabee Ra’anana.”

Lakers switched their focus ahead of the season opener

Weatherspoon joined the NBA as the 49th overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. He spent three seasons with the San Antonio Spurs and Warriors. His numbers aren’t really exclusive, but his experience can help the Lakers in so many different ways. Weatherspoon has career average of 2.1 points per game while shooting 45.2% from the field in 42 regular season games.

The Lakers have a plan for Weatherspoon, otherwise they wouldn’t go after him at this point of the year. He also played in the G League and General Manager Rob Pelinka saw something he likes.

In 57 regular season games, Weatherspoon averaged 18.6 points, 4.8 rebounds, 4.4 assists, and 1.5 steals per game while going 48.6% from the field and 31.6% from the three-point line. He played in nine Showcase Cup games, two Exhibition games, and two G League playoff games.

Now is the perfect moment to add a fresh power to the roster. The Lakers are getting ready for the very first game of the season and yes, playing against Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets makes it even more exciting!
