Jimmy Garoppolo Could Be Patriots Backup QB Option

The New England Patriots have a big issue at quarterback. They selected Mac Jones hoping to turn him into a decent quarterback option for the team. Jones was great in his first season with the team, but struggled in year 2. His struggles persisted and head coach Bill Belichick has a few potential scenarios to work with. He also has to find a good backup option behind Jones, and the Patriots should consider getting… Jimmy Garoppolo?

The Las Vegas Raiders fired head coach Josh McDaniels. This could play a big role in Garoppolo’s future with the team. If the Raiders cut ties with him, Garoppolo will have to agree to play backup somewhere else. If this happens, the Patriots would be the ideal destination for him.

Las Vegas should make the first step. We aren’t really sure that they want to do this because they wouldn’t have a strong backup situation in that case. Garoppolo’s deal could make things easier for the Raiders.

Patriots know Garoppolo really well

Garoppolo knows the Patriots and he’s been part of the team for quite some time. He has experience being backup quarterback in New England and played for the team as a backup for Tom Brady. He is a little older now and prone to injuries. Will the Patriots even agree to have him back?

“I think that with Garoppolo, what’s gonna happen — I don’t think they’re benching him to put him in bubble-wrap like they did late last year with Derek Carr, but that’s part of it,” Mike Florio said on his “PFT Live” podcast on November 1.

“He’s got $11.25 million in injury guarantees that become fully guaranteed in March. So, keep him healthy, don’t let him get injured, you won’t owe him that money if you cut him. I think, if he can pass his physical now, I’d cut him.”

The Patriots have to make a few moves to secure their quarterback position.
