Patriots’ Bill Belichick Breaks Silence On Waiving ‘Troubled’ CB

The New England Patriots parted ways with cornerback Jack Jones and NFL analysts saw this coming. Head coach Bill Belichick shared his honest take on the troubled CB and his departure from New England.

Jones is a really good player and has great skill set, but he didn’t fit in New England. The team decided to get rid of the fourth-rounder. Belichick benched him in Weeks 9 and 10 after the player missed curfew at a team hotel.

“Patriots CB Jack Jones was given an opportunity to improve his attitude this week in Germany and didn’t, per source. As a result, he was waived,” Doug Kyed wrote on Twitter/X.

The NFL world predicted this move and Belichick shared details about it on Monday. He tried to ignore all questions related to Jones’ waiving, but Monday was a good day to address it. Belichick did admit that Jones is a talented player, but also made sure everyone knows that he had to go.

“Jack’s a talented player,” Belichick said. “He showed that when he played for us at times. In the end, I felt like we just needed to move on. But he’s a talented player.”

Belichick had to let the CB go

Jones may be a talented player, but he caused a mess in New England. He joined the NFL in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. He could have been better pick, but he caused problems in college.

“The Patriots are taking troubled Arizona State CB Jack Jones at 121,” Albert Breer wrote on Twitter.

Jones was ruled academically ineligible at USC and the school kicked him out. The reason? The police arrested Jones for burglary in 2018. He tried to fix his career and even looked like a good pick for the Patriots. The Patriots gave him a chance to perform. He delivered two interceptions and also had a pick-6 on Aaron Rodgers in Week 4. Pro Football Focus gave him a 74.7 grade and yes, he earned it.

The police arrested Jones again in June this year. He didn’t get any jail time as Jones agreed to one year of probation and 48 hours of community service. This incident had a huge impact on his role with the team.

If you ask Scott Zolak, he would say that the Patriots should have waived Jones in the summer.

“Should have cut him a week ago,” said former Patriots quarterback and team color analyst Scott Zolak. “He should have been cut this summer. He should have been cut the second this thing went down, we all know what went down. Should have been off the team at that point. I think we all agreed on that. Nobody argued that. Nobody.”
