Report: Patriots Offered Redskins First-Round Pick For Trent Williams

Isaiah Wynn will probably start at left tackle this season, but the New England Patriots are still trying to add depth at that position. Sources reveal that New England offered the Washington Redskins a 2020 first-round pick in order to get Trent Williams, but their efforts went down the hill. Kevin Sheehan of The Team 980 and JP Findlay of NBC Sports Washington reported on the offer.

According to the reports, the Washington Redskins weren’t ready to give up on Williams for that little. The player is holding out for a new deal at the moment.

Well, it turns out that none of this was true. NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport reported that the report of the Redskins turning down the Patriots’ offer was “unequivocally not true.”

Earlier this week, Redskins head coach Jay Gruden admitted that there were no updates regarding Williams’ contract.

“There are no updates whatsoever,” Gruden told media members Monday. “We’re preparing with the guys we have right now. That’s all we can do. We’re getting Geron (Christian Sr.) ready. We’re getting (Donald) Penn ready. So we’ll go that route.”

Several pundits have already said that Williams won’t go to New England..

“Regarding a possible Trent Williams trade, one team I believe you can cross off is the Patriots. Isaiah Wynn continues to progress in his recovery, with Dan Skipper getting reps in the meantime. Can’t see New England being involved.”

In other words, the Redskins want their player back on the field.

“I shot my shot,” Adrian Peterson said of his efforts to convince Williams to rejoin the team. “I know how Trent is, so I just left it alone. After we talked that first time about it, I wasn’t going to be the guy that was going to pester him or anything like that. I don’t know. To be honest with you, I don’t know. I wouldn’t be surprised if he didn’t come back, and if he did, I wouldn’t be surprised. That’s honestly where I sit.”

Peterson “only had one conversation” with Williams about the current situation in the locker room. He says that returning to Washington would be “a decision [Williams] had to make on his own.”

Peterson also added that Williams’ absence is felt on the field.

“Trent is the best left tackle in the league, hands down,” he said. “He’s the most athletic left tackle in the NFL. And to not have him on the left side, it hurts. When you’re missing the best player on the team, you’re going to feel the effect of that. It’s different for our quarterbacks to sit back there and not know for certain that their back side is protected. When Trent is back there, you know that your back side is protected. It just brings confidence for the quarterbacks and for the running backs, too, within the run game.”
