Quarterback Coach Shoots Down ‘Lazy Narrative’ About Cam Newton Signing With The Patriots

Is Cam Newton the right fit for the New England Patriots? The 31-year-old signed a one-year deal with the team, and his deal is packed with incentives. Newton will probably replace Tom Brady. Well, head coach Bill Belichick will probably make him earn that spot. The former Carolina Panthers quarterback will compete with second-year quarterback Jarrett Stidham and journeyman veteran Brian Hoyer for the starting role.

TB12 was the Patriots’ starting quarterback for two decades. There’s a big difference between him and Newton. The latter is more mobile than the GOAT. Brady didn’t really use his feet to make plays.

Cam Newton will lead the Patriots to a win

George Whitfield is a private quarterback coach who has worked with Newton. He believes that every concern related to Whtifield is nothing but hot air.

“You almost wonder, ‘Why would the league allow this?’ ” Whitfield told ESPN’s Tim Keown in wake of Newton’s reported deal with the Patriots. “From a competitive standpoint, Cam and Belichick is a natural fit. It literally takes a shark to recognize another shark.”

The Patriots needed a quarterback and they decided to give Newton a chance. He was a NFL MVP for the 2015 season and he was able to lead the Panthers to the Super Bowl. Newton may be 31 but he has so much to offer. The veteran will become a free agent next offseason and he may get a better deal at that point.

Will Newton have great success with the Patriots? We don’t know that. Newton will have to adjust to Belichick’s regimen and accept his rules. Let’s be honest. Belichick is pretty strict.

“Suggesting that Cam can’t adapt to Belichick is a lazy narrative,” Whitfield told Keown. “Cam recognizes this as a singular opportunity. I can imagine Belichick telling him, ‘You have goals, and you have a chip on your shoulder. We have goals, and our shoulders look the same as yours — just not as big.’”

Let’s see how will things go with the Patriots. Maybe Newton is the best replacement for Brady.
