Report: Magic Johnson Repaired Relationship With Rob Pelinka

The Los Angeles Lakers won the 17th championship in team history thanks to LeBron James, Anthony Davis and the rest of the guys. It took six games for the Lakers to defeat Jimmy Butler and the Miami Heat. It was a good win and players did their best to bring home the Larry O’Brien trophy. They even took it to their parties! Well, this isn’t the only good thing that happened in LA. Former president of basketball operations Magic Johnson and Rob Pelinka seem to be in good relationship at the moment.

Johnson brought LeBron to LA but the team didn’t have much success. The king sustained a groin injury and the young core struggled against tough opponents. Johnson’s resignation took place right before the end of the 2018-19 season. It came like a surprise to many current and former basketball players.

The NBA Hall of Famer had something to say about Pelinka shortly after his departure. Brad Turner from L.A. Times reported that the two work really well together.

“After I left, that stuff was in the past,” Magic Johnson told The Times. “But I was still a Laker and nothing changed there. And the love that Jeanie and I have for each other will always be there and always has been there. That didn’t change either.

“I’ve always wanted the best for the Lakers, and that’s why anything that I can do to help the Lakers back to winning an NBA championship, I was going to do. Rob and I were able to move past the situation, and now we’re good. We’re friends. We were talking about repeating last night.”

Magic Johnson and Rob Pelinka praise each other

Magic Johnson was among the first people Pelinka called right after LA won the title. The basketball legend is no longer part of the front office but he follows every move the team makes. He has provided great support for the team, and Jeannie Buss could call him at any point of the day. The same applies to Pelinka. Johnson was available day and night.

Johnson and Pelinka worked together in the Lakers front office for two years. The situation between them looks a lot different now. Pelinka is grateful for the two years he had with Magic Johnson.

I still have such gratitude for the two seasons I got to work with Earvin, and he’s definitely a part of tonight with his vision and working side by side,” Pelinka said following the Game 6 win. “He’s an unbelievable person, and we have a great, incredibly strong relationship. He was one of the first calls tonight. Had a great talk with him.”
