Report: Patriots Veteran Quarterback to Rejoin Team After Being Released

The New England Patriots have just one available quarterback on the field at the moment. They cut both Brian Hoyer and Cam Newton on Tuesday. Jarrett Stidham underwent back surgery this summer to fix a nagging injury. Head coach Bill Belichick brought Jake Dolegala just to cut him right away. So, what’s Belichick up to this time? According to Zack Cox from NESN, a former Patriots quarterback may rejoin the team before the start of the regular season.

It’s Hoyer. The Patriots kept him around so he can mentor Mac Jones. He was the third option behind Newton and the rookie and Bill Belichick wanted him to add depth to the quarterback unit.

The Patriots veteran quarterback has a really good chance to rejoin the team as Jones’ backup

Jones needs a backup and Hoyer is pretty close to being that. The team sent him away but he can return right away. Newton is no longer an option and Belichick would gladly re-sign a familiar face. Hoyer has been part of the team for a really long time. He knows Josh McDaniels’ offense well and maybe he will take more reps on the field in 2021.

What about Stidham?

Greg Bedard from the Boston Sports Journal reported that the Patriots are focused on the young player and everything he has to offer. They didn’t trade or cut him and this makes us believe that he may be the perfect backup for Jones. Stidham was brilliant in OTAs and he showed the Patriots that they have a really good reason to keep him on the roster.

“I do know that Jarrett Stidham is more on Patriots’ radar now than he was a year ago, and that the team feels he just needed to get right physically. So plan could be Mac, Hoyer and Stidham, with Stidham No. 2 when he’s ready.”

What’s next on the list for New England? They had five quarterback options a few weeks ago and Jones is the lone warrior now.

NFL analysts tried to predict Belichick’s next move, hoping to attract the attention of the legendary coach. We can’t really say much before the official decision. Let’s see what happens in Foxboro. The Patriots have to get ready for TB12 by Week 4.
