Retired Pro Bowler Thinks New England Patriots Have Their Next Tom Brady

Being compared to Tom Brady in your rookie campaign is quite a challenge, and Mac Jones knows it really well. The New England Patriots were looking for the best replacement for the greatest quarterback of all time. Is Jones the future franchise quarterback? Well, he led the Patriots to a 7-4 record, and that’s not something you underestimate. Jones was able to build a good connection with his teammates and their chemistry is of great help at the moment. Have the Patriots found their next Tom Brady in Mac Jones?

Former Patriots linebacker Shawne Merriman has been watching the Patriots win games. According to him, comparing Jones to TB12 is not such a bad thing.

 “I’m more surprised that everybody is calling Mac Jones a star,” he said. “Like he didn’t get drafted the way he did or the Patriots don’t draft well. You don’t draft a quarterback that high unless you have a tremendous amount of confidence in him.”

Mac Jones leads the Patriots, may be the next Tom Brady

Cam Newton didn’t fit in Josh McDaniels’ offensive system. The Patriots gave him another chance this summer but Jones beat the former NFL MVP in the quarterback competition. Head coach Bill Belichick relies his game on the defense and picks up offensive players who can help the team win.

Merriman is well aware of the fact that the Patriots see Jones as the perfect quarterback option at the moment. They decided to trust him. McDaniels is really happy with Jones’ development on the field. The rookie quarterback is able to do pretty much anything in his games. His excellent relationship with his teammates makes everything easier.

“They knew immediately it was OK to pass the torch over to Mac Jones,” Merriman said. “He could be a great one in the making, especially in that system with (coach) Bill Belichick. It’s nothing but upside for him.”

The Patriots won’t ask too much from Jones. They need him to contribute to the game and lead his team to the playoffs. That’s what makes him a good quarterback.
