Mike Evans May Be The Answer To Patriots Wide Receiver Woes

The New England Patriots have to rebuild their roster. They have to fix their quarterback situation, because Mac Jones doesn’t look like someone who can lead the team on the long term. The receiving unit needs a boost as well. According to reports, the Patriots need to do an effort to sign Mike Evans. He could be the solution to all their problems. NFL analysts agree that Evans is the most consistent receiver in the league.

The good news is that Evans can become a free agent this offseason. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers didn’t reach an agreement with the veteran prior to the regular season. They usually place the franchise tag on their valuable player to keep him around. However, Tampa Bay can choose to let Evans go this time.

Patriots have a few reasons to consider getting Evans

Evans’ presence on the open market will be a game-changer. NFL teams would gladly enter the competition to sign the star wide receiver.

The Patriots need a consistent player at wide receiver. Evans is an ideal option as he has had 10 straight 1,000-yard campaigns. He must be proud of his NFL record. This could also motivate the Buccaneers to do the unthinkable to get him. In 2023, Evans had 79 receptions for 1,255 yards and was tied for a NFL lead in touchdown catches (13).

Jerod Mayo will gladly work with Evans as he could help them solve their quarterback situation as well. Evans will also help any quarterback on the Patriots roster.

“I don’t know what more you can say. He’s done this for 10 years now,” Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles said of Evans, per NFL.com. “Over 60 catches 10 years in a row. Over 1,000 yards 10 years in a row. You know he’s getting the ball and everyone is trying to stop him, and he makes plays over and over. It’s a credit to him and his work ethic. The way he approaches the game, it’s unbelievable.”

There are some obstacles on the way though. Evans had over 80 catches just twice in his great NFL career. He is considered a downfield threat and the Patriots need more than that. Age could also be an issue. Evans will turn 31 in the 2024 NFL season. Mayo may be looking for a younger receiver.
