Report: New England Patriots Re-Sign Another Free Agent Quarterback

The New England Patriots add fourth quarterback. They are looking for the players that are ready to compete for a Super bowl. One of the biggest questions has been surrounding the New England Patriots quarterbacks and who could fill in for Tom Brady.

It has now been announced that they have added yet another piece to the puzzle with former Michigan State quarterback Brian Lewerke.

Reports have recently come out that Lewerke was added only a few days after being cut. This must mean that the coaching staff saw something in him.

Lewerke was a stud at Michigan State, throwing for a jaw dropping 8,293 yards and 47 touchdowns in his years there. He was also a beast in the ground, running for 1,255 yards and 10 touchdowns which are some pretty note worthy numbers. He was the starter at Michigan State from 2015 to 2019 and was a game changer.

Lewerke went undrafted in the 2020 NFL draft but was picked up shortly thereafter.

With The Patriots adding Lewerke, New England now has a total of 3 quarterbacks going into the 2020 season. Currently they have Cam Newton, Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer. Newton is likely going to be taking the starting job after Tom Brady left for Tampa Bay earlier this year.

It will be very interesting to see what Brian Lewerke can add on and off the field. He will likely not be getting too much playing time. He could, however, find a place on the practice squad which would be a nice addition.

Mike Giovando, a quarterbacks coach, had this to say about Lewerke.

“I’ve always liked his demeanor,” Giovando said. “I’ve always liked his personality and he’s just got a way of you can tell that things don’t bother him. He’s athletic, you know, a really, really good athlete, and I think that he’s super intelligent. He’s a smart guy that understands football really well. He gets it and he’s got all those intangibles and the leadership ability, and he can throw the football, man. He’s can make the throws. There’s not a throw he really can’t make. He has a strong arm and he does a lot of things really, really, really well.”

As a result, the Patriots should be ready to roll in the fall.
